Naming Convention: 04_Alter_Ego_2018FA_01.ai and 04_Alter_Ego_2018FA_02.ai
Due: November 28th
Focus
Using the Pen Tool and understanding how bezier curves work.
Description
Until the pen tool is mastered you have just scratched the surface of what can be done in Illustrator. In this assignment, you will start in Photoshop and arrange a rough portrait of yourself or a friend and then alter it to show them as a character or alter ego in Illustrator. This could range from anything from a cartoon character to the president of the Moon. We will be using the tablets to create a digital background for your alter ego.
The Piece
Your final piece will be two separate images.
The first is a regular Illustrator portrait of a friend. You can stick closely to the color scheme that is in the original picture.
The second will be an altered version of the original portrait showing them as some sort of alter ego. This second portrait should have a color scheme that you have chosen and will be able to name in the critique.
There will be a concentration on the idea of discerning highlights mid-tones and shadow in this portrait and if you choose the background can consist of a digital painting created in illustrator.
Next class: Email me or bring in a typed, printed paper with 5 different ideas for your alter ego. We will begin work on your concept next class a so you will also need a good set of images of you or your friend. Please note YOUR TRACING IMAGE CAN NOT BE TAKEN WITH PHOTOBOOTH.
Due Date: Your final illustrator file named 04_Alter_Ego[namingdate]_01.ai and 04_Alter_Ego[namingdate]_02.ai emailed to me.
Project requirements
While you will not get any additional points for doing the following, not doing them will result in a loss of points.
- The project should be properly named as indicated in the ‘Naming Convention’ section at the top of this page.
- The project should be turned in to me as an AI file before class on the due date.
- Major objects should be grouped and named (you do not need to name every single shape you create)
Technical
- How cleanly you have traced your images (a good use of curves over multiple points).
- All major layers should contain 1 color (smaller items like eyes and lips can be on the same layer but not large items like skin highlights mid-tones and shadows).
- Your rendering of highlights mid-tones and shadows.
- The compositional balance of the piece.
Theory
While you should always keep in mind how all the elements and principles apply to each composition for this assignment I’d like you to concentrate on:
- Shape
- Color (including your color scheme for your alter ego)
- Line
- Unity
- Variety
- Balance
